Why would any recreational vehicle (RV) owner wants a Do It Yourself (DIY) solar system? One of the reasons is the high cost of a custom built solar power setup. An RV usually has 2 options to generate electricity for the living compartment. The first option is to use a gasoline generator to produce electricity when the vehicle is parked. Some people do not fancy this option because it is noisy and creates a lot of pollution. It also has a high running cost because you have to constantly top it up with gasoline.
The second option which is more desirable is to use solar panels to generate electricity. It is clean, efficient, does not generate any pollution whatsoever and require minimum maintenance. The only drawback in the installation cost. A custom built RV solar power system which can generate up to 440 watt can cost as much as $3000! Many RV owners would rather spend the money on other improvements. Because of the high cost, many motor homes owners are turning to Do It Yourself (DIY) solar kit for RVs. The system is not perfect, nonetheless, it is capable of generating usable electricity for the living area at a lower cost.
A homemade solar system is actually quite simple. The key components are the solar panels, charge controller, battery storage unit and power inverter. The other miscellaneous parts supporting the system are amp meter, voltage meter, disconnect switches and safety cut off fuses. The heart of the entire system which is the solar panels is to be installed on the roof of the vehicle. If your RV has a flat roof, this will be a simple process. However, if the roof of the vehicle is curved, then a special mounting would have to be made to cater for it.
The mounting plays a major role to ensure the Photovoltaic (PV) panels are working at its optimum capacity. When it is laid flat on the roof, the panels will not have the best angle to capture the sun light. Movable mounting which can be adjusted or tilted would be the best solution.
All the PV panels are to be connected to the charge controller which will use the current generated to charge the battery bank. When building the battery bank, it is best to choose true deep cycle battery. This is the type of battery used on electric golf carts. They are more durable and can be discharged to a lower level without damaging its internal plates. The final step is to hook up a power inverter to the battery and then run an extension cable around the RV living compartment. You can now enjoy free electricity on the open road courtesy of the sun.
Tips to get best performance from your tires mile after mile
I see more than 60% vehicle owners complaining about low performance of tires or replacing their vehicle tires much before that expected period, probably you are not among those. But if yes, your ignorance for the proper maintenance of tires is mainly responsible for this failure. Today, I thought to share some tips for getting peak performance from the tires.
The condition of tires significant effect upon the braking, steering, traction, load support, comfort and fuel mileage like variables is directly linked with safe and comfortable driving. Under or over inflation, poor maintenance, road defects, structural defects, improper installation, overloading and ageing etc are the main factors that seriously affect the condition of tires. I understand that some of these factors like road defects and ageing are beyond personal control but we are lucky enough by having the control of others factors. To maintain the right air pressure according to the recommendations level, check it at least once a week in cold condition. Don’t compromise even with slight air pressure variations. I notice many vehicle owners coming for tire replacement with improper alignment. Some vehicle owners think wheel alignment and balancing as the maintenance practices that are performed during tire replacement or periodic scheduled service. Contrary to this misconception, regular alignment and balance check is necessary for retaining the ideal shape of tires, to reduce pressure upon engine and to enjoy jerk free driving. The period for performing this check depends upon the road conditions and driving habits. Tire wears off may also lead to wheel misalignment. Periodic tire rotation (front tires to back and back tires to front) in four wheelers is another good trick to improve the performance of the tires. Rotate both the tires at one time. If your vehicle is expected to be ideal for log period, park it under shade or cover it properly as the sun increases the ageing effect. Apart from developing regular checking/maintenance habits and improvement in driving habits is also essential to reduce your vehicle maintenance bill. Regular tire check and maintenance doesn’t need much time or technical skill; you just need to understand the importance of safety.

In today’s world, most people own a car and we all know they don’t come cheap anymore. The shine and sparkle makes the payment worth it so why not protect it for years to come. We spend time, energy and money cleaning and waxing to preserve that new car shine, take it a step further and protect your investment today with a quality car cover.
Using a car cover will preserve the finish and protect against dings and scratches while you are not driving. There are many dangers and potential hazards out there. The UV rays of the sun can cause fading and interior cracking. Hail can cause dimples. Windy conditions can send branches and debris on a collision course with your car. Tree sap and bird droppings can be unsightly and difficult to remove. Snow and ice can be an inconvenience, especially before that commute to work. If you use a car cover, all these worries, inconvenience’s and potential damages can be prevented.
Where you live can help you determine which cover works best for your vehicle. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, you should consider a three or four layer cover to give you that extra protection when Winter comes around yet sufficient coverage for the Summer sun. If you live in the South West a two or three layer cover will suffice, just be sure it is rated for UV protection. If you live in the South East, be sure it is 100% waterproof.
Immediately purchasing a car cover to protect your vehicle will dramatically extend the life of vehicles exterior and interior but there is also a practical advantage for those who live in the colder climates – a car cover will avoid the need for you to clean your windshield of snow and ice and help you get the car moving quicker on those cold Winter mornings!
One thing to note, even if you have a garage, a car cover can help. Dust has a way of getting into and on everything and a garage is no exception. Fine particles within dust can cause scratching when wiped away. Covering your vehicle prevents that dust from settling onto the finish. A cover will also protect from dings and scratches that can be caused by the trash cans or bicycles often stored in the garage with the cars.
Proper fit is also something to consider when purchasing a car cover. If it is too big, the wind can interfere with the covers ability to properly protect your cars finish. They make covers for all makes and models and most sites have a section to guide you into making the right size choice. Also, returning an ill fitted cover, especially if purchased on line, can be costly. Most companies will not cover return shipping for the wrong size choice. If you are having trouble determining the size, pick up the phone and call the company’s customer service and they can help.
Next is finding the best price. I always recommend shopping on the Internet as you will have more options and better pricing. To find a quality cover, do some research, just type in car cover, truck cover, etc. on a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, Bing and so forth. Be sure to shop around and look at the return policies and warranties. You may also want to check shipping costs, some companies offer free shipping, some do not so search out the best option for you.
Once you have received your cover, before trying it on for size make sure your vehicle is clean and free of debris so as to avoid scratching. It is best to always ensure the car is clean before covering. Also, if you need to return it, it must be in the same shape as received i.e. clean and free of dirt and dust etc.
From time to time you will need to clean the cover as well, I recommend hosing it down while on the vehicle and air drying there as well but there are other options for cleaning the cover. Most sites will have a care and cleaning section. Be sure to maintain the cover properly to ensure it protects your car, truck, SUV, RV etc for years to come.
Never heard of a lifted truck? Well, the simplest way to visualize one is by thinking of a huge truck which you see in movies that crush smaller vehicles. Lifted trucks are generally of the same size as these trucks, have big tires and are equipped with a lifter that would allow them to withstand bigger shocks.
However, a lifted truck is high maintenance and requires more control as opposed to the regular vehicles because of its huge size. It is therefore important to procure one from a reliable truck dealer and brand name. One such name that you can rely on without batting an eyelid is Ford. Lifted Ford trucks are durable and are top quality utility vehicles. Ford is by far the name that comes to mind when one thinks of customizing a vehicle. You can choose from a selection of vintage models as well as more contemporary and modern ones.
Even while selected a lifted Ford truck, be sure to check that the brakes are working well. Because the wheels are bigger in size, bigger calipers and rotors would be needed to stop the tires from moving when the brakes are applied. To ease steering, fix a drop down bracket to the front suspension. Again, due to the huge size of the wheels, unless the front suspension is enhanced, steering would become difficult. You will also need to equip your trucks with strong shock absorbers, stabilizer bar and even leaf springs. Owning a lifted Ford truck does come with additional responsibilities. Always be careful when driving because the truck comes with a lower bumper as compared to other types of vehicles.
Owning a lifted truck can indeed prove to be an expensive hobby. Investment in the vehicle itself and the mandatory accessories would be necessary. Also make sure you regularly maintain your truck so that you do not incur high service costs. If you are willing to pursue this hobby, it is worthwhile and a good hobby that you can get into.
